Sesame Workshop Gets Digital ABCs From IBM

IBM and Key Partners to Create and Host Secure
On-Demand Digital Asset Management System

LAS VEGAS, NV - Apr 7, 2003 - Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization behind the award winning series Sesame Street, has selected IBM to develop and host an advanced digital asset management system. The agreement, announced at the National Association of Broadcasters annual conference, will enable Sesame Workshop's in-house departments to sell and distribute print, television, video, product development, and interactive programming material, globally and on-demand.

IBM and its technology partners are teaming to develop an integrated system that will allow for e-commerce and instantaneous rights management. The system delivers on Sesame Workshop's Digital Asset Management objectives to better organize and manage its content internally, and distribute it to business partners, securely with specific, pre-determined, authorized business rights.

IBM, RightsLine Inc., Telestream Inc, and Ancept Inc., IBM's new strategic alliance partner for digital content management, are creating a networked system that allows Sesame Workshop's staff, including Editing, Post Production, Sales/Marketing, and Research, for the first time, the ability to deliver programming and educational material, quickly and easily, via a standard Web browser. The system establishes a single access point repository that allows content to be distributed economically and securely. Underlying business rights are maintained and managed for maximum benefit to Sesame Workshop.

"IBM and partners are delivering to us one of the most complete systems we have seen, from rights management to hosting. The new technology will integrate with what we have already, and allow us to digitize and manage our content in open standards-based formats, and provide on demand access for ourselves and our customers," said Sherra Pierre, VP of Information Systems at Sesame Workshop. "This is particularly exciting as we venture into Sesame Street's 34th Season on April 7th, 2003."

The digital asset management system will allow for video to be transcoded into various formats and bit rates that immediately delivers "all digital play lists," effectively streamlining the management of video assets and improving workflow, which translates into substantial time and cost savings. The system will also integrate business rights (i.e. territory, duration, exclusivity, etc.) for associated content along with managed related agreements, documents and workflows. The system is also centered on encoding, indexing, organizing, storing, viewing and distributing Sesame Workshop content, which includes textual, graphical, musical and video content.

Digital Asset Management On-Demand

Sesame Street will also deploy IBM's next-generation computer services by allowing its new digital asset management system to be hosted and managed at IBM's e-business hosting facility in Secaucus, New Jersey. By using Digital Media On-Demand utility services, Sesame Workshop has the ability to exploit its assets, while doing more with e-business. Sesame Workshop will reduce the amount of capital expenditures, normally spent on such large-scale digital asset management systems, by eliminating the infrastructure costs of building and managing the system themselves. IBM will do the software, server, and network storage set-ups. IBM will do the backup and disaster recovery, and provide the bandwidth necessary for global delivery, all paid for on an "as-needed" utility computing model.

"This on-demand digital solution allows us to become more efficient and effective in our overall mission. The impact to our business includes better organized content, improved creative processes and workflow, improved decision making, and of course brand consistency. For our business partners it is an immediate bridge to our content and therefore a stronger extension of our mission," concluded Pierre.

System Framework

The system will work by integrating IBM's powerful DB2 Content Manager and DB2 Universal Database software technology with technology from Ancept, Telestream, and RightsLine, all hosted at IBM's e-business hosting centers. The utility function gives customers the ability to pay for what they use, as needed.

Content will be encoded using Telestream's open standards flip factory. Front ending IBM's DB2 Content Manager repository will be Ancept Media Server, which will catalog all relevant meta-data and provide searching, viewing and distribution capabilities. RightsLine software will secure all content by tagging it with pre-prescribed business and usage rights associated with that particular piece of content. DB2 Universal Database will manage all aspects of the overall environment. Content will either reside on IBM disk or IBM tape, depending on the frequency of usage.

Systems Highlights

The Sesame Workshop digital asset management system will do the following:

  • Speed accessibility
  • Be built on OPEN Standards
  • Deliver desktop access for editing and other functions
  • Address business rights -- for maximum value
  • Simplify the process of moving, managing and accessing media assets -- from source to destination
  • Provide complete video manipulation, from encoding, transcoding and indexing to searching, streaming and distribution
  • Integrate, be modular, be scalable, and be built with legacy systems
