Dana Midby
VP of Product at Rightsline
As 2024 draws to a close, I'm thrilled to reflect on the significant progress our team has made this year on enhancing Rightsline's IP commerce platform. Our goal this year was twofold: strengthen our connection with users and enhance functionality in ways that matter most to them. Thanks to valuable feedback from our community, we’ve achieved both. Here’s a look at what we accomplished, what we learned, and what lies ahead.
What We Accomplished
Connecting In-Person: Two User Group Forums
This year, we had the pleasure of hosting two user group forums, bringing customers together for collaboration, feedback, and meaningful networking. These gatherings were more than just productive—they highlighted the strength of our community, where customers freely share success stories, challenges, and aspirations. Along the way, we also discovered a shared love for Friends, belting out Sweet Caroline, and nominating Keanu Reeves as the ultimate zombie apocalypse ally. Beyond providing critical roadmap input, these forums reminded us that we’re part of an incredible ecosystem, united by a shared vision and some truly great taste.
A User Experience (UX) Refresh and UX2 Launch
Listening to customer feedback shared during Executive Business Reviews and our LA User Group Forum earlier this year, we launched a user experience refresh to our UX2 interface. This update went beyond aesthetics to deliver a streamlined, intuitive interface to enhance productivity and simplify workflows. Recognizing that user needs evolve, we remain committed to continuous iteration and refinement to ensure the platform meets the highest standards for all users. An additional major highlight was introducing the Configuration module, enabling us to retire the classic application and improve the overall user experience across the board.
Enhanced Usability Through the Strategic Partner Program
To ensure our improvements align with real-world user needs, we introduced the Strategic Partner Program. This initiative engaged with customers to better understand how they interact with our platform and uncover opportunities for future UX enhancements.
Exciting New Features
2024 brought a suite of powerful tools and features which included:
- Component List Pages for Efficient Data Organization—originating from our 2023 Strategic Partner Program, this feature drives data management efficiencies, enabling users to organize and access information quickly and intuitively. It has since become one of our most widely used new tools!
- Configuration Comparison Tool for Streamlined System Customizations—simplifies system customizations by enabling users to quickly and confidently confirm configuration changes across environments.
- Audit History Navigator for Detailed Tracking & Transparency—centralizes audit data across records, allowing users to track changes to fields, lifecycle stages, relationships, and to easily identify who made changes and when they occurred. This is the first of several data navigator tools that are in the works.
- New Tools for Avails and Conflict Reporting—introduced over a dozen Audit and Conflict Engine tools, including an enhanced UI for rights history, new conflict types, preferences administration, export options, and a streamlined resolution dashboard for efficient conflict management.
- Enhanced Accounting, Currency, and Allocation Capabilities—features new allocation methods, reusable percentage-based allocation models, dynamic GL assignments, and improved currency conversion controls.
Building Unified Teams and Interfaces
Blended teams across Rightsline worked together to integrate the best of Rightsline’s rights and royalties features to deliver a unified user interface and comprehensive new portal experience. Key milestones include a new tool for UI configuration layout, seamless access to royalty calculation statements through our self-service portal, and significant progress toward our goal of a common user interface.
What We Learned
Listening to Our Users Yields Results
Through Executive Business Reviews, User Group Forums, and our Strategic Partner Program, we gained over 200 new ideas, invaluable insights, and fantastic recommendations from our user community. These insights are helping shape our product roadmap with a laser focus on improving productivity, expanding AI-enabled features, and enhancing our financial capabilities. Here are a few of the top suggestions we’re considering as we shape the future of our roadmap:
- Enhancing productivity tools like Task Management, more bulk tools, and customizable dashboards.
- Harnessing AI/ML for smarter contract ingestion, natural language interfaces, financial anomaly detection, and recommendations to streamline daily operations.
- Empowering users with self-service portals to reduce inquiries and manual tasks by enabling features like sales report uploads and expanded dashboards for external users.
Data-Driven Decision Making
We also saw a clear demand for continued investment in reporting and analytics tools that make our platform’s data more actionable and accessible, even for novice users. This year’s releases, like Component List Pages and Audit History Navigator, sparked excitement for even greater advancements in this area.
Looking Ahead to 2025
While 2024 was packed with accomplishments, I’m even more excited about what’s ahead in 2025, which I believe will be our most innovative year yet. The insights and ideas gathered throughout 2024 have laid the foundation for an ambitious and transformative roadmap. By combining the feedback from Executive Business Reviews and user forums with the expertise and best practices from our newly acquired colleagues at RSG Media and FilmTrack, we’re uniting the best of our capabilities to deliver the most comprehensive and powerful IP commerce platform in the industry.
Our focus for 2025 is clear: we’re leveraging everything we’ve learned to enhance productivity, expand AI-enabled capabilities, and deliver robust financial tools that adapt to our users’ evolving needs. Collaboration remains at the heart of our journey and your feedback and partnership inspires us to push boundaries and reimagine what’s possible. Together, we’re not just building a platform—we’re shaping the future of IP commerce.
Here’s to another exciting year ahead, fueled by innovation, bold ideas, and shared success.
